Downer Ave. Criterium
*GUESS I NEED TO POST MORE!!*
The men's Pro 1/2 peloton returns to the historic triangular shaped criterium course on Downer Avenue, known for it's long, rough straights, tight turns, big crowds, and lots of prize money!
Attacks were viscous and relentless. Eventually, seven riders were able to escape and gain a lap on the suffering field.
The wheel pit saw plenty of action helping to get racers back in the race after tire punctures or crash damage.
Primes for $30, $50, or $100 are the norm.
The largest was on the bell lap ... for $1,000 !
On the final lap, Team Kelly Benefit Strategies put the hammer down to lead out their rider David Velliux who was in the group that gained a lap.
The final sprint was confusing until it could be sorted out just who, of those that had gained a lap, was the first to cross the line.
Indeed, it was Kelly Benefit Strategies David Velliux who won the race.
Bernie Sulzberger (Fly V Australia) retains the yellow leader's jersey, Jay Thomson (Team MTN) holds the red sprinter's jersey.
