Wheels on Willy May 18, 2008 : 21st annual Wheels on Willy bike race held in a residential area on Madison, WI's south east side. Nifty course with some tight corners and a long, gradual up hill to the finish. It also runs in front of the Chrono Metro bike shop. A 'must attend' race every year.

2008 Tour of Elk Grove - Pro - Saturday : The 2008 Tour of Elk Grove Pro race started in Shaumburg did 8 or 9 seven mile loops and finished in Elk Grove with 4 laps of the 2 mile circuit there. Multiple attacks were launched quickly following the neutral start, with the pack eventually splitting in half. Toyota United mostly controlled the last few laps until the bell rang for the final time. Into the final turn, Kelly Benefits led it all out. As the crowd anxiously watched on the jumbo TV screen to see how the sprint would develop, the second rider in line, perhaps Alex Candelerio went too wide and crashed. About 5 others were also tangled up in the wreck including Chris Horner (Astana). On the line it was Hilton Clarke (Toyota United) beating David Veileux (Kelly Benefits) by a length.

2008 Tour of Elk Grove - Pro - Sunday : Day three, an 80km criterium in Elk Grove. The first few pictures are from the Elite 1/2 race. In the Pro event, six riders get away for most of the race which included Tyler Hamilton. Just past the half way mark, four of the six crash at the top of the hill! but are granted free laps and continue on. The break is held to 30 seconds until about 5 laps to go, then it's 'pedal to the metal' for the final sprint. David Veilleux (Kelly Benefits) gets a great lead out at 300 meters to go, but Brad Huff (Jelly Belly) comes from six back with a powerful sprint that gives him the victory.

2009 Greenbush Collegiate Road Race April 18 : It's the college team racers that test this tough new course out for the first time. Later, in June, it will also be used for a stage in the Tour of America's Dairyland. Not as many photos as I would have liked because of technical difficulties, many great shots were unusable. SORRY! 2009 LaCrosse Fitness Festival Criterium : The inaugural LaCrosse Fitness Festival Criterium held right next to the Mississippi River. The weather was PERFECT with the first summer like day of the year. A good turnout from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and a few from Canada (!) made this event a success. It was great to finally compete with other racers from nearby states and this was the perfect setting to do so.

2009 Superweek - Stage 1 - Beverly : A large crowd witnessed the start of the 41st International Cycling Classic, also known as Superweek even though this week is 17 days long. Riders from across the USA as well as Germany, Australia, South Africa, and Puerto Rico are present. As expected, it was a fast pace right from the gun with 15 riders gaining a lap by half distance and later, 11 more escaped further up the road. In the end, it was Aussie Bernie Sulzberger (Fly V Australia) who took the win. Indianapolis rider Chad Barzilauskas (Kenda) took second, and last year's overall Superweek winner, Johnny Cantwell (Fly V Australis) took third.

2009 Superweek - Stage 2 - Blue Island : Josh Carter (ABD) WINS !! Numerous breaks were away during the race. On the final lap, it looked like Andy Crater's move off the front might stick - he still had 7 seconds on the back straight. But it was "Gruppo Compacto" as they exited the final turn. As you can see, Carter just took it on the line for a fine Superweek win, out sprinting Hans Dekkers (Garmin) and Andreas Muller (Gormetfein). Last year, Dekkers beat Boonen in a race held in Amsterdam. So, if Dekkers can beat Boonen, and Carter can beat Dekkers, does that mean Josh Carter is faster than Tom Boonen??

2009 Superweek - Stage 5 - Arlington Heights : Arlington Heights Andreas Muller (Gormetfein) takes the sprint from a break of 5 riders that gained some 30 seconds in the later stages of a fast and exciting race. With 13 laps remaining, Muller went for a $100 prime and took Sullivan, Freund, Feng, and Hoffarth with him to make up the winning move. While earlier, multiple attempts were made to escape, including one of 20 riders, none were successful. This one, however, despite heavy chasing by Gear Grinder and other teams,was not to be denied. Zach Davies snuck away from the field (almost getting nipped on the line) for 6th, and the Australian pair took the field sprint for 7th and 8th. 1 Andreas Muller Gourmetfein 2 Sean Sullivan Hotel San Jose/ 3 Ryan Freund ABD Johnsburg, IL 4 CHUN-KAI FENG TEAM EXUSTAR Taiwan 5 Will Hoffarth Mountain Khakis Harrisburg, NC 6 Zachary Davies Madison, WI 7 Jonathan Cantwell Fly V/Australia 8 Bernard Solzberger Fly V Australia 9 Chad Hartley Geargrinder Milwaukee, WI 10 Carlos Vargas Hotel San Jose Austin, TX In the women's race, a field sprint decided the day's champion and it was Shontell Gauthier nipping teammate Nicky Wangsgard (both Colavita / Sutter Home) for the honors. 2009 Superweek - Stage 7b -Shorewood : In the evening of the Short Course day, the Pro 1/2 riders raced a ctiterium in nearby Shorewood. The women had an agressive race with many attacks and agressive battles for the APC Point sprints. Nicky Wangsgard (Colavita Sutter Home) took the victory tonight. Following the women, the men began their 100 km event but not too soon after the start, officials shut down the race. There was a fire in an apartment right at the finish line! Fortunately, no one was hurt, and racing once again resumed but this time with a twist - with the shortening of the race (the sun is going down) the APC Point sprints are now every 5 laps and organizers still haven't given out any of the $3,000 in prime money promised. Whoa ... it's going to be a barn burner now! (no pun inteded) $100, $200, $300 primes were given out lap after lap. Attacks were launched constantly! With three laps to go, Hans Dekkers (Garmin) wins the Shorewood Community Prime worth $1,664 ! Interestingly, while Dekkers did not remember the name of the rider that beat him in the final sprint down in Blue Island, he certainly recognized him as a very strong sprinter and you can see in the photo above that he was sure to follow ABD's Josh Carter to the line for that $1,600 prime sprint! South African Christoff Van Heerden (MTN) tooks the very tight field sprint to be tonight's champion. Rob White (Gear Grinders) retains the red point leader's jersey and Bernard Solzberger (Fly V Australia), who took a rest day today, remains in yellow. It was all VERY EXCITING !

2009 Superweek - Stage 8 - Holy Hill : Holy Hill Road Race It was a chilly day at Holy Hill, tempertures hovered around 60 degrees (16 C) with a light rain falling on and off. Everyone mentioned the cold weather but no one complained, especially after the 90+ degree temperatures they experienced just a few weeks earlier. None the less, these racers were anxious to tackle the steep and frequent hills that this area is known for. In the Pro 1/2 race, four riders were able to escape and elude the field to the end.. Jay Thomson (MTN - South Africa), Andrew Bradley (Gourmetfein - Germany), Toby Marzot - MA, USA) and Reid Mumford (Kelly Benefit Strategies - CO, USA) built up a lead that extended to three minutes over an agressive, but dwindling field. Here we see overall series leader Bernard Solzberger (Fly V Australia) attack. He finished fifth. Jay Thomson (MTN) took the win, over Gourmetfein's Andrew Bradley on the short, uphill sprint to the line.. Shortly thereafter, Toby Marzot (Khakis) beat Reid Mumford (Kelly Benefit) in a close sprint for third. In the 3's, Marc Howe (Gear Grinders) made it look just too easy.and gave us the "Stylin' Post up of the day" !

2009 Superweek - Stage 9 - Schlitz Park : Schlitz Park Criterium Jay Thomson (Team MTN) from South Africa wins two days in a row! It was attack, attack, and attack up the sharp incline that dominates the Schlitz Park course. Many breaks saw daylight from the field, none survived. With just 3 laps remaining, Thompson won a $60 prime and stated that he figured one of his team mates would counter, "but they just let me go". Well, not quite, but it was all Thompson from there and as you can see, he solo'd into his second win in a row, his third of the series. Local area rider Zachary Davies of Madison, WI was second and overall series leader Bernard Solzberger (Fly V Australia) was third. It was a hard fought battle, I'll just let the photos speak for themselves. Sydney Brown (Mercy Cycling) was one of three riders that lapped the Pro Women's field and took the sprint over local Kristin Wentworth (Kenda) and Taiwan's Mei Yu Hsiao. Also very worthy of mention was Cat. 3 Marc Howe's second victory in two days, followed by Chicago's Chris Padfield (Get A Grip) and 15 year old Alexey Vermeulen (A2 High Gear) of Ann Arbor, MI who is no stranger to the awards podium.

2009 Superweek - Stage 10 - Evanston : Evanston It was back to the windy city of Chicago again for more racing, this time on the east side, in Evanston. It's a fast course that is hard on both man and machine.. In the Pro Women's race it was Hub Racing's Josephine Giddens of New Zealand that took a gamble with 2 laps to go and held it for a sweet win over a hard charging field. The Pro Men's race seemed to be locked up early when Carl Menzies (Ouch), James Stemper (Gear Grinder), and Ronnie Strange (San Jose) rolled off to a quick 40 second lead and it looked like they were gone. Meanwhile, back in the pack, the battle for the red points jersey continued between local hero Rob White (Gear Grinders) and South African Jay Tomson (MTN). Isn't it ironic that they would both be taken down when a spectator got on the course. Both riders returned to the race on replacement bikes. After 48 laps (61km) in the lead, from what appeared to be a winning margin, the three man break was caught. with 16 laps (21km) to go. Immediately counter attacks were launched and a group of five slip up the road. Local Garmin favorite Mike Freeman gave it a go with two laps remaining. But it was not to be, MTN got ANOTHER victory, this time with Christoff Van Heerden. Bernard Solzberger (Fly V Australia) remains in the yellow leader's jersey that he earned back on the first race, 9 days ago. Jay Tomson takes back the red points jersey from Rob White with a two point lead but White's team mate James Stemper closes in to within 4 points with still 7 days remaining.

2009 Superweek - Stage 11 - Whitnall Park - RR & Crit. : This gallery contains photos (or will) from both days at Whitnall - the Road Race and the Criterium (or shorter circuit race). Ahhh ... from the big city intensity of Chicago yesterday, to the scenic serenety of Whitnall Park today. From big buildings and crowds ... to barns and frogs. Not to say there wasn't any hard racing today, just that it's a completely different setting. The Pro Women's race featured plenty of attacks but it wasn't until late in the race that Melissa Dahlman of Minneapolis (MBRC/Flanders) and Josephine Giddens of New Zealand (Hub Racing) escaped and stuck it to the end. Dahlman floated up the final climb by herself and crossed the line first. In the Men's Pro race, numerous attacks were reeled back in until eventually a group of 13 gathered off the front with the right members and were allowed over 2 minutes. Team MTN from South Africa rode tempo at the front of the field to control any attacks. Rock Racing made it's first appearance today, perhaps a sign of a shake up in the dominance of a few select teams in this series so far. Team MTN takes yet *ANOTHER* victory, this time by Juan Van Heerden. Second and third was Alexander Candelario (Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Hans Dekkers (Garmin). No points sprints were contested today and Bernard Solzberger (Fly V Australia) remains in the yellow overall leaders jersey.

2009 Superweek -Stage 12 - Cedarburg : Cedarburg Criterium While the women and lower classes raced again at Whitnall Park in the morning (that gallery still coming), the Pro Men raced in Cedarburg, a 40 minute drive north. A good sized crowd showed up on this Tuesday night to cheer on the racers on this fast course that wound through local neighborhoods and finished right downtown. The race was fast and furious. All the major teams attempted to escape but the right combination never materialized to get very far up the road. Kelly Benefits was very active as well as Bissel, MTN, and Garmin. However, after 100km of attack and counter attack, it all came down to a one lap showdown on a very dark Washington Avenue, the main street in Cedarburg. With two laps to go a large prime was announced and Andrew Bajadali (Kelly Benefit Strategies) went for it solo. Taking the prime and the bell for the final lap, he just kept going! All together as they rounded the final, tight turn, it was Australia's Jonathon Cantwell crossing the line first !!! Whooops ... uh, wait a minute. Let's look at that finish camera again. 1. Andrew Bajadali (Kelly Benefit Strategies) 2. Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V/Australia) 3. Bernard Sulzberger (Fly V Australia) 4. Juan Van Heerden (Team MTN) 5. Hans Dekkers (Garmin Slipstream) So, with still five days of racing remaining, Bernard Sulzberger (Fly V Australia) retains the yellow leader's jersey that he first wore on day one, 11 days ago, Jay Thomson (Team MTN) of South Africa wears the red point's leader jersey with a mere 3 point lead over local rider Rob White, and today's winner Andrew Bajadali (Kelly Benefit Strategies) wears the day's champion white jersey.

2009 Superweek - Stage 13 - Lake Front Long Course : Lakefront Road Race (long course) Ahhh, it's great to be back on this historic course right on shore of Lake Michigan, the third largest of the great lakes. The anticipated rains moved out early leaving sunny skies for the rest of the day. Most of the leading Pro men lined up for this 150km test with Ricardo Van Der Velde (Garmin) literally going from the gun, anxious to get things underway. It wasn't long before he was joined by Heath Blackgrove (Hotel San Jose) and together they embarked on a three hour journey up and down the bluffs lining the lakeshore. Behind them a small chase group of four grew and grew as the top leaders in overall bridged up. Blackgrove and Van Der Velde pressed on ... ... as all the conteders grouped behind. In the final kilometers, attacks absorbed the lead duo, and also broke up the lead pack into smaller groups. Spectators also enjoyed some improptu announcing by Australian Jonny Cantwell who took the day off from racing. It was interesting hearing his take on the happenings in the current cycling world. Down Lake Drive for the final time, Karl Menzies (Team Ouch) takes the win over Heath Blackgrove (Hotel San Jose) who recovered from his earlier escape and local favorite rider James Stemper (Gear Grinders).grabbed third.

2009 Superweek - Stage 14 - Racine : Racine Criterium After yesterday's 4 mile road course, the riders today were greeted by an eight corner downtown criterium course that measured a mere 1km in length. A bumpy back straight and tight turns added to the fun and favored the breakaway. Early on four riders gave it a shot. Carlos Vargas (Hotel San Jose), Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V/Australia), Brandon Gritters (Kahala La-Grange), and Daniel Bowman (Kelly Benefit Strategies) managed to gain 40 seconds (over half a lap) but were brought back during the first point's sprint. The APC Nutrition points competition was hotly contested tonight with local favorite Rob White (Gear Grinders) looking to regain the leader's red jersey from South African Jay Tomson (MTN). Four points separated the two at the start. Tomson proved to be too quick tonight however and advanced his lead to eight (147 to 139). Meanwhile, more riders rode off the front and this time six proved to be enough power to lap the field. 2009 Superweek - Stage 15 - Kenosha : Kenosha Criterium I know you guys are looking for your photos ... I've got 'em all saved and put in order, I just need time to pick out the best ones and upload.. Only two days left! The Kenosha course is a 1km rectangle and FAST. Turn two is a tight left hander with a little dip right in the apex and at full speed, you can get squeezed a bit. That's why the big crowd hangs out there! In the Pro Men's race, four riders escaped early and gained a lap with 40k to go. They were Andrew Bradley (Gourmetfein - Austria), Hilton Clarke (Australia - won the 2006 US Pro Crit. Championships), Hayden Godfrey (New Zealand, 2008 World Champion Track Omnium ), Sergio Hernandez (Rock Racing - USA, won a Superweek stage in 2007). Attacks were plentiful and it got quite confusing as little groups were forming off the front. Eventually every move was contained with the exception of the four who were a lap up, and preparations were made for a blazing field sprint. Hilton Clarke came up with the win, Kiwi Hayden Godfrey second, and Sergio Hernandez third. A special welcome to tonight's podium girl - Oksana from the Ukraine!

2009 Superweek - Stage 16b - Downer Ave : Downer Ave. Criterium *GUESS I NEED TO POST MORE!!* The men's Pro 1/2 peloton returns to the historic triangular shaped criterium course on Downer Avenue, known for it's long, rough straights, tight turns, big crowds, and lots of prize money! Attacks were viscous and relentless. Eventually, seven riders were able to escape and gain a lap on the suffering field. The wheel pit saw plenty of action helping to get racers back in the race after tire punctures or crash damage. Primes for $30, $50, or $100 are the norm. The largest was on the bell lap ... for $1,000 ! On the final lap, Team Kelly Benefit Strategies put the hammer down to lead out their rider David Velliux who was in the group that gained a lap. The final sprint was confusing until it could be sorted out just who, of those that had gained a lap, was the first to cross the line. Indeed, it was Kelly Benefit Strategies David Velliux who won the race. Bernie Sulzberger (Fly V Australia) retains the yellow leader's jersey, Jay Thomson (Team MTN) holds the red sprinter's jersey.

2009 Superweek - Stage 17 - Whitefish Bay : Whitefish Bay (Final Stage) Photos from the Pro race and podium ceremony now uploaded. I know that our friends overseas are anxious to see them! I also recorded the audio of the final podium ceremony. I will try to post that later today! Michael Anderson (Schwag Racing) won the final Cat. 3 race. In the Men's Cat. 4/5 it was Robert Karlow (Verdigris) with the win. Yvonne Schumacher (IS Corp) wins the Women's Cat 3/4. Chris Halverson (IS Corp) takes the Masters 40+. Taiwan's Mei-Yu Hsiao took the final stage for the Pro Women. Their team's first win of the series and a fine way to wrap up a successful campaign. Finally, Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V Australia) takes his first victory of the series after being a faithfull lead out man to team mate and overall champion Bernard Sulzberger. Full summary and series wrap up later today! (Then I start uploading a LOT of photos from all categories from this previous week.)

Race the Lake : Quick preview of the "Race the Lake" bike race that circles Lake Winnebego in Wisconsin. The one lap, 90 mile race features a $2,000 prize for first place and $500 for the King of the Hill at the top of the bluff at High Cliff State Park. Since I will be in Chicago on race day (Sunday August 16, 2009), I drove the course to get a look at it. Looks like a blast!
